2009 5th Grade Picnic at Baker Beach

What an amazing day at the beach!  It started out drizzly and sprinkling, and ended up being the most beautiful beach day ever.  The kids loved the sand and the ocean, and did NOT listen to Ms. Kim and dared to get their feet wet.  But no complaints were heard, so all went smoothly!

Pizza, brownies, fruit, veggies, chips, cheese and crackers were on the menu today, and the kids ate it all up with gusto.  Everyone had a terrific time!  This will undoubtedly go down as one of the best Baker Beach picnic days Sutro kids have ever had!

Rain Scheduled for Friday?

Rain is looming!  We may need to cancel our trip to Baker Beach on Friday, due to the forecast of rain.  In lieu of the beach, we will be having our party in house at Sutro.  The menu will be the same...pizza and whatnot.

However disappointed you may be, students, please try to remember how many activities you have enjoyed thus far.  5th grade at Sutro is unlike other elementary schools.  You have had your fabulous Mt. Lake school picnic, parfait party, graduation party, and had time to get autographs from everyone in the school.  Not to mention you will have your smoothie party next week and the adults/5th grade basketball game.  Appreciate the things you have enjoyed so far and try not to dwell on the missed opportunities!

Oh, and also do the anti-rain dance for Friday.  Because if it does NOT rain...Baker Beach it is!

Congratulations, Graduates!!

Congratulations, students!  You have now graduated from 5th grade.  You all have a wonderful journey ahead of you.  Enjoy it, and don't take it for granted.  Your time in middle school will pass quickly, and before you know it you will be high school students!

I'm so very proud of all of you, and will miss you dearly.

Mt. Lake Park THIS FRIDAY

If you are wondering about the picnic this Friday, here are some of the details: We will be leaving at 9:45 a.m. (this is an approximate time.) Families are welcome to join, as long as they don't mind volunteering. We need all the help you can offer!

The kids will be provided with lunch, so you do not need to pack your child's lunch or bring lunch money.

We will be at the park until after noon, at which point we will all return to school for the school raffle! It is not too late to buy your tickets now. You could win some terrific prizes with your donation to Sutro!

Please do not bring any toys to the park, as they may be lost in the shuffle. Games and activities will be provided by the school and Ms. Shaz, our fabulous P.E. instructor.

See you then, students!

Harvesting the Radishes

After many weeks of waiting, the students finally had their chance to harvest the radishes that have been growing on the stoop of the stairwell. Their patience paid off, because the vegetables were delicious! There were a few different kinds of radish planted, but the consensus was that they were all tasty in their own unique way. The kids tasted every part of the radish, including the stems and leaves.

Everyone was thrilled, and we thank Ms. Vermette for all of her hard work and creativity with the nutrition program this year. We have all learned to eat healthier and take care of our bodies by using the right kind of "fuel." Thank you, Ms. Vermette! We will miss you over the summer.

The End is Near!

The kids are feeling the anxiety and excitement of the end of the year, and for some it is a little daunting. The idea of leaving a school they have been familiar with for years can be intimidating, especially when they have known nothing else but Sutro and the family they have created here.

Remember to encourage your children to think about what they would like to get out of their 5th grade education, and to plan a "bridge" over the summer so they won't be so shocked by the 6th grade curriculum when it comes in August.

A "bridge" over the summer can be anything from a tutoring program or class to a summer camp that emphasizes academics as well as enrichment programs. This can help kids keep their focus on learning and knowledge when television and video games are tempting.

Please look into local programs and classes in your neighborhood to see if there is something that may keep him/her involved, interested, and active. In other words, turn off the television, shut down the computer, and take the fun outside!

Annual All School Picnic at Mt. Lake Park

Testing is now over! The kids are sighing relief as we continue on through the last four weeks of school. In case you haven't seen the school calendar on this blog (down below on the right) the next event for the students is the annual school wide picnic at Mt. Lake Park, which is scheduled for May 29th. This picnic is followed by a raffle on the lower yard of Sutro, so if you can possibly volunteer or attend, please do!

Hopefully, you also received the raffle tickets and request for raffle prize donations from the PTA. Thank you for your help and generosity!

The picnic begins mid-morning and continues until afternoon. Hot dogs and all the fixings will be provided for the children.

Please make sure you read every notice that is coming home at this time. And if you are NOT getting these notices, please make sure you check your child's backpack every day. There is important information you must receive that pertains to the end of the year.

P.E. at Mt. Lake Park

Ms. Shaz, our fabulous P.E. instructor, had the great idea to take the kids to Mt. Lake Park for class today. She ran the kids ragged, and led them in a rousing game of softball. It was a great break from the testing schedule that has been looming overhead for the past week.

Ms. Shaz has been teaching the kids about sportsmanship, healthy living and exercise, and basic tolerance of others since she arrived at Sutro this year and we are very grateful to her for being such a terrific influence on our young students. Room 11 had a great time at the park today because of her quick thinking and thoughtfulness. Thank you, Ms. Shaz!

Internet Safety

There are some very important things that you need to keep in mind when you're on your computer at home.

First, remember never to give out personal information such as your name, home address, school name, or telephone number in a chat room or on bulletin boards. Also, never send a picture of yourself to someone you chat with on the computer without your parent's permission.

Never write to someone who has made you feel uncomfortable or scared.

Do not meet someone or have them visit you without the permission of your parents.

Tell your parents right away if you read anything on the Internet that makes you feel uncomfortable.

Remember that people online may not be who they say they are. Someone who says that "she" is a "12-year-old girl" could really be an older man.

To read more about new privacy rules, visit the Federal Trade Commission's Web site at http://www.fbi.gov/cgi-bin/outside.cgi?http://www.ftc.gov/. There is a special section just for kids.

There is a publication for parents to read for more information.

The Importance of Homework

At this point in the year, students in 5th grade should be able to do their homework independently. All homework that is sent home is either related to lessons in the classroom during the week or attached to their state report.

Many kids do not turn in their homework in on time, or at all, in some unfortunate cases. If this happens, it is up to the parent to monitor their progress in school by checking their homework on a DAILY BASIS. Their work should be checked every day like clockwork. Although students should be able to schedule their homework in a timely manner so it is complete by the end of the week, it is a challenge for some. Organization is a key skill that they need to learn in order to succeed in school.

Being organized is a very important part of school and learning, and in middle school, it is emphasized in every aspect of the curriculum. We are trying to instill this forward thinking in our students in 5th grade at Sutro. However, it is impossible for a sole teacher to successfully encourage a student to be organized. Teachers need the help of family and parents.

Parents should consider homework time VALUABLE QUALITY TIME to spend with their children. This not only keeps parents abreast of what their child is learning in school, it also allows them time to nurture their child and to show the value of education.

Remember: If YOU value education dearly and model that belief for your children, they will follow suit. Show your child that learning and school is important to you, and they will do their best in the classroom.

Please check your schedule time and make sure you don't miss your appointment. Since we have a full class of 33 kids this year, conference times are completely booked and rescheduling can be difficult. I look forward to seeing you next week!

The Amazing Field Trip

The students had an amazing field trip to the Academy of Sciences, thanks to Lindzy and the Rock Foundation. We arrived promptly at 9:15 a.m. and entered the Planetarium. The show was incredibly educational, not to mention a wonder to watch! Everyone was quite impressed with the show and the knowledge of the docent leading the lecture. Do not miss it, if you visit the Academy in the future!

After the show, we had 30 minutes to explore before lunch. Luckily, there was a paper airplane making class upstairs, and the kids took full advantage. Everyone learned about paper airplanes and how they work, and made their very own to take home.

Lunch was "green" and delicious! Everything was compostable, including the packaging the food came in. On the menu was turkey sandwiches, home made potato chips, red seedless grapes, and a yummy cookie, either chocolate or oatmeal. To top it off was a fizzy Izzy drink. It was a wonderful treat.

After lunch, we went to the 3D Bugs movie (narrated by Dame Judy Dench) in the upper theater. The kids looked sporty wearing their fashionable 3D glasses, and jumped at every effect on the screen. At one point, everyone was grabbing at butterflies that were flying in the theater!

We had a full hour to roam, and the fabulous chaperones took their small groups of kids and went exploring. The consensus was that the aquarium downstairs took the cake. Kids loved the many different exhibits and the touch pool, and talked about them incessantly after the trip.

Aside from the aquarium, the most amazing contraption the kids chattered on about was the HAND DRYER in the bathrooms...no paper towels for the Academy...it was air powered and endless fun for the students. Go figure!

Jump Rope for Heart!

The Sutro students all joined together on Thursday to do some jumping for heart!   Everyone did a fabulous job, and Room 11 jumped their hearts out.  For the speed jumping competition, our very own Jack won his division with 300 jumps per minute!  I was impressed with their devotion to the cause.  Good job, students!

"Jump Rope for Heart is a national educational fund-raising program that is sponsored by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD).

Jump Rope for Heart engages elementary students in jumping rope while raising funds to support lifesaving heart and stroke research.  This educational program teaches physical fitness and promotes the value of community service to students and their families.  It shows students that they can contribute to their community's welfare."

Our classroom alone raised over 100 dollars for Jump Rope for Heart.  Thank you parents and students.  The American Heart Association appreciates your generosity and time!

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCE SIGN UP!

Parent/teacher conferences are scheduled for the week of March 16-20, during which school will be excused an hour early at 1:40 p.m. Please make a note of it.

If your child has not given you the sign up sheet I passed out a week ago, please make sure to ask him/her about it and sign up as soon as possible. The spots are limited at this point, and you will be asked to take what is left.

This is a mandatory conference. All parents are expected to attend. Thank you!

Making the Most of Your Parent/Teacher Conference

This is part of an article from Scholastic.com. To check out the whole article, please click on the link!

Before the Conference

Start preparing early. Don't wait until the night before to get organized. Create a folder at the beginning of the year in which you store test scores, big homework assignments, and your notes (about things your child has told you or any other topics you want to address).
Talk to your child. Ask how she's doing in class, what's going on during lunchtime, recess, and when she goes to special classes like music or gym. "You want to find out both the positive and negative," says Rozea. If you don't like what you're hearing, investigate. Talk to other parents to see if their children are expressing similar concerns. "You need to find out whether your child is perceiving everything accurately or if she's misunderstanding a situation," she says.

During the Conference

Arrive early. With only a few precious minutes to spend, you don't want to be late. It will shorten your time with your child's teacher and affect her day's entire schedule.
Enter with the right attitude. The goal of both the teacher and the parent should be the success of the student, but sometimes parents have a hard time discussing tough issues. Rather than put the teacher on the defensive, arrive with a compliment to start the conference off on the right foot. ("My son is really enjoying the unit on space" or "We had a great time on the field trip.") Then address any concerns in a respectful way.

Find out the communication protocol. Don't let this be the only time you talk to your child's teacher. Ask how she likes to communicate, suggests Sagarese, whether it's by email, notes passed through a folder, or phone calls. "Reinforce that you are there if she wants to talk to you," she says. "Let the teacher know you want to be that kind of partner."

After the Conference

Follow up. If the teacher brings something to your attention that needs to be addressed with your child, take steps to put the plan in motion, whether it's helping with organizational skills, getting extra help, or addressing a social issue.

Update your child. Start with the positive things her teacher had to say, then fill her in on any concerns you and the teacher discussed. Explain how you can all work together to ensure your child has a successful year.

Field Trip to the Academy of Sciences

Our next field trip is to the Academy of Sciences for a special program they have designed and funded just for fourth and fifth graders in San Francisco.  Big thanks to Arthur and Toni Rembe Rock Fund for Enhancement Museum Visits for Students for making this trip possible.

We have been signed up for the Planetarium show, which features...
"...a Tour of Our Solar System, in which we embark on a trip from planet Earth, navigating into orbit around our star, the Sun.  En route, students compare gaseous and rocky planets to moons, asteroids, and stars, ultimately examining what makes a planet a planet (or not) through the eyes of a scientist."
To add to this amazing trip, will be also treated to a free "green" lunch as well as free t-shirts for the kids that will give them admission to the Academy until August 31, 2009!  Each student also gets one complimentary family pass to enjoy any time.  Thanks, Academy!

I have noticed a surge in requests to chaperone this trip.  Unfortunately, I can not accept any more parent requests to accompany the kids to the Academy.

However, I always need chaperones to look after the kids on other trips.  I would love to have parents who can handle taking a group of kids when we visit museums in the future.  Please understand that chaperoning a field trip is work, however, and not just a fun trip.  Our job as adults is to make the fun happen for our fabulous students and to ensure their safety!

Thank you, parents!

Gung Hay Fat Choy!

The kids celebrated the Chinese New Year today with our annual Tea House Celebration.  This yearly event is widely considered the most delicious school lunch of the year!

All Sutro students enjoyed their meal, and then went on to enjoy their lunch, too.  Fifth graders can put it away!

Adventures in Music

Every year, the upper grades in the Unified School District have the opportunity to watch "mini" concerts at various locations around the city.  We had a field trip to an AIMS concert at neighboring Laurel School down the street, and it was the first of several we will be watching this year.

The kids LOVED the Stringer Sisters as they explained the differences between a violin, viola, and cello.  A few of them also enjoyed the chance to actually play instruments in a rousing rendition of "POP Goes the Weasel."

Our very own Adrianna actually conducted the strings for a bit, as you can see in the picture above.  She was a very commanding conductor, and directed them smoothly and without incident.  Excellent job, Adrianna!

Dear President Obama...

The students are very excited about the Inauguration of our new President, Barack Obama.  So much so, in fact, that they wrote short letters to him asking him to change America for the better.  Some gave advice on how to run the country, others focused on the environment and healthcare system.  All of them were then glued onto the large map of America Ms. Lau's 3rd grade created.  Hopefully, the rest of the upper grades will also write their notes to President Obama soon, so the map will be complete.

It's an impressive map!  Take a look in the library when you have a minute.

San Francisco Symphony

Every year, the upper grades travel to the incredible San Francisco Symphony to listen to some classical (and not so classical) music.  It's a terrific chance that not a lot of students often get, and we always take advantage of the invitation when it comes.

This year's music focused mainly on familiar sounds and songs that the kids might or might not know.  An American in Paris was one of the selections, which was full of car horns, construction, birds, dogs, and people chattering.  It was interesting how the instruments made sounds they normally would not make in their usual use.

The kids loved the music, although some fell victim to the comfortable seating in the Symphony Hall.  We can't all be music lovers, I suppose!

The Presidents

The President's Reports are now in and they are amazing!  Some of the pictures were inspiring, some were revealing, all were incredible.  The oral reports went off without a hitch, although some need to speak up.  Little mouse voices don't work well in a class of 33, unfortunately.

Most of the pictures and drawings are currently hanging in the computer lab right now, so check them out when you get a chance!  GREAT WORK, STUDENTS!

Science with Ms. Molly

Our fabulous librarian, Ms. Molly, taught the kids a wonderful lesson on vascular plants!  They created their own Botany Books, and will continue to add to them as the year progresses.

Having Ms. Molly as our librarian has been lucky for Sutro since she has had experience teaching science before.  The kids will no doubt benefit from her knowledge of the subject matter.

Not to mention, they love the activities she plans for them.  She is one of a kind and we are grateful for her presence.  Thanks, Ms. Molly!  See you next week!

Touching Hearts

We are lucky to have a science-savvy librarian, Ms. Molly, to find us fabulous opportunities in the science world.  Today, we actually touched real hearts!

There were four to choose from...a cow's heart, a reptilian heart, a pig's heart, and a human heart.  The human hearts were given by donors to the UCSF Medical School, and Ms. Molly borrowed them for our lesson on the cardiovascular system.  It was amazing.

The kids were naturally taken aback by the smell of the alcohol.  It was pungent, to say the least.  But they were all troopers, and very curious about the hearts.  Everyone put on a glove and touched them, explored every aspect, and then wrote about them in their journals.

Thanks, Ms. Molly, for the chance to see something that elementary school students don't normally get the chance to see!

(And thanks to her wonderful daughters, both of whom were natural teachers.  The kids appreciated their presence as well!)

Emotions and Art

The great artist Paul Cezanne once said, "A work of art which did not begin in emotion is not art."  Truer words have rarely been spoken.

The kids reveled in an art project today, which allowed them to use their creativity and talent in drawing, and gave them the opportunity to take a well-deserved break from the grueling 5th grade curriculum.  The subject was EMOTIONS.  Everyone picked a few, and drew their rendition on paper.  The result was surprising and impressive!

They are currently displayed in the computer room, so please take a look when you get a chance!  It is truly a collective work of art.
