Touching Hearts

We are lucky to have a science-savvy librarian, Ms. Molly, to find us fabulous opportunities in the science world.  Today, we actually touched real hearts!

There were four to choose from...a cow's heart, a reptilian heart, a pig's heart, and a human heart.  The human hearts were given by donors to the UCSF Medical School, and Ms. Molly borrowed them for our lesson on the cardiovascular system.  It was amazing.

The kids were naturally taken aback by the smell of the alcohol.  It was pungent, to say the least.  But they were all troopers, and very curious about the hearts.  Everyone put on a glove and touched them, explored every aspect, and then wrote about them in their journals.

Thanks, Ms. Molly, for the chance to see something that elementary school students don't normally get the chance to see!

(And thanks to her wonderful daughters, both of whom were natural teachers.  The kids appreciated their presence as well!)
