P.E. at Mt. Lake Park

Ms. Shaz, our fabulous P.E. instructor, had the great idea to take the kids to Mt. Lake Park for class today. She ran the kids ragged, and led them in a rousing game of softball. It was a great break from the testing schedule that has been looming overhead for the past week.

Ms. Shaz has been teaching the kids about sportsmanship, healthy living and exercise, and basic tolerance of others since she arrived at Sutro this year and we are very grateful to her for being such a terrific influence on our young students. Room 11 had a great time at the park today because of her quick thinking and thoughtfulness. Thank you, Ms. Shaz!

Internet Safety

There are some very important things that you need to keep in mind when you're on your computer at home.

First, remember never to give out personal information such as your name, home address, school name, or telephone number in a chat room or on bulletin boards. Also, never send a picture of yourself to someone you chat with on the computer without your parent's permission.

Never write to someone who has made you feel uncomfortable or scared.

Do not meet someone or have them visit you without the permission of your parents.

Tell your parents right away if you read anything on the Internet that makes you feel uncomfortable.

Remember that people online may not be who they say they are. Someone who says that "she" is a "12-year-old girl" could really be an older man.

The Importance of Homework

At this point in the year, students in 5th grade should be able to do their homework independently. All homework that is sent home is either related to lessons in the classroom during the week or attached to their state report.

Many kids do not turn in their homework in on time, or at all, in some unfortunate cases. If this happens, it is up to the parent to monitor their progress in school by checking their homework on a DAILY BASIS. Their work should be checked every day like clockwork. Although students should be able to schedule their homework in a timely manner so it is complete by the end of the week, it is a challenge for some. Organization is a key skill that they need to learn in order to succeed in school.

Being organized is a very important part of school and learning, and in middle school, it is emphasized in every aspect of the curriculum. We are trying to instill this forward thinking in our students in 5th grade at Sutro. However, it is impossible for a sole teacher to successfully encourage a student to be organized. Teachers need the help of family and parents.

Parents should consider homework time VALUABLE QUALITY TIME to spend with their children. This not only keeps parents abreast of what their child is learning in school, it also allows them time to nurture their child and to show the value of education.

Remember: If YOU value education dearly and model that belief for your children, they will follow suit. Show your child that learning and school is important to you, and they will do their best in the classroom.

It's that time again. Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled for next week, Monday through Friday. As you all know by now, this means early dismissal at 1:40 p.m. Please make a note of it, because we hate to see kids left to wait in the office for over an hour. Thank you!

Please check your schedule time and make sure you don't miss your appointment. Since we have a full class of 33 kids this year, conference times are completely booked and rescheduling can be difficult. I look forward to seeing you next week!

INTERNET HUNT: Research your state.

Draw a map of your state. Use the whole page, and use colors. Include the physical details of the land, including mountains (if you have them) and landmarks. Mark the capital clearly. Make sure you do a good job on this assignment, because it will be included in your final report of your state.
